When I think about Judgment Day and standing before Christ, it truly makes me look at my life here on earth from a very different perspective. Many of the Church Fathers, our Bishops, Parish Priests have all presented many ways in which we can work towards our Salvation. I recently read a book by Archmandrite Constantine Cavarnos entitled Path and Means to Holiness. Archmandrite Cavarnos said that those who are in this world can attain Salvation through…
* Following the Ten Commandments
* Attending the Divine Liturgy
* Partaking in the Holy Sacraments
The first three areas that he addresses were taught by our parents, relatives and Church school teachers since my early days. The topic of Almsgiving, however, was not truly understood until I became an adult. Almsgiving is defined as money, food, or other donations given to the poor or needy; anything given as charity. One very important aspect of almsgiving is the support of our Church through Stewardship. The reason that this is critical is that our Church provides the ability for us to participate in and partake of the first three areas but this can only be done with the full support of the Stewards and their equal sacrifice of Time, Talents and Treasures.
